A six-day, five-night bareboat training charter across the British Virgin Islands for a couple working toward buying their first catamaran. One partner came with some sailing experience, the other was starting from scratch. Over seven stops from Norman Island to Tortola, the week covered the full picture of what owning and running a catamaran actually involves: sail handling, anchoring, docking, navigation, passage planning, weather reading, and onboard systems. Katie joined as First Mate, working directly with the client's wife on the practical side of running the boat from the inside, provisioning, daily routines, and building real confidence in the first mate role.

Throughout the week they had the opportunity to see and compare multiple catamarans in anchorages across the BVI, giving them a real-world reference for what to look for when the time comes to buy. They left with a clear sense of what boat suits them, what skills they still want to build, and the confidence to know they can handle a vessel safely and make informed decisions. No syllabus, no course checklist, just focused practical preparation for the life they are planning.

The owner and his family came aboard ready to learn. Over several days across the Bahamas, from Palm Cay in Nassau through to Clifton Bay, the whole family got involved. Everyone had a role. Everyone got their hands on the boat.

We worked through anchoring, sail handling, winch work, navigation and safety together. The kids learned the systems alongside the adults. Aircon, watermaker, generator, all explained and practiced on their own boat so nothing felt foreign. We caught fish, cleaned them on deck and cooked them the same day.

By the end the family was running the boat. Not watching, not following instructions, actually running it. The owner knew his vessel, knew his crew and had everything he needed to take his family across to the USA on their own. A family passage from the Bahamas to the United States, planned and completed by themselves. That is what good training looks like.

Eleven days preparing Sweet Pea for her delivery passage from Sint Maarten to Atlantic City, working under Tradewinds.

Pre-delivery preparation on a vessel of this size is methodical work. Every system checked, every line inspected. New mainsail installed and commissioned. Roller furler line replaced. All running lines whipped, sorted and colour coded for quick identification at sea. Auto bilge pump installed and tested. New LED lighting fitted below. Full interior and exterior clean and organisation completed before departure.

Sweet Pea left Sint Maarten delivery-ready.

Nine days offshore from Sint Maarten to Atlantic City on a Fountaine Pajot Ipanema 58. Three crew, solo watches, open ocean. The passage gave us everything — calm conditions, a 40 knot gale, dramatic cloud formations and some of the best sunrises and sunsets you get at sea. Great sailing overall.

Responsibilities included solo watches, sail changes, engine maintenance, vessel systems checks and keeping a line in the water when conditions allowed. Sweet Pea arrived in good shape and ready for handover.

Two offshore deliveries of a Voyage 590 catamaran from Cape Town, South Africa to Tortola, British Virgin Islands. A total of 6,000 nautical miles per crossing, completed non-stop over 39 days. Responsibilities included standing solo watches, daily vessel upkeep, engine, generator, rigging, water maker and electrical troubleshooting underway, and training the delivery crew throughout the passage.

Skippered a Bali 5.4 catamaran on multiple delivery legs through the Eastern Caribbean, covering BVI to Grenada, Grenada to Saint Martin, and back to the BVI. Each leg involved full passage preparation, crew and safety briefings, standing solo watches, and maintaining daily vessel upkeep throughout.

Part of a three-man maintenance crew based in Grenada for the 2025 hurricane season, responsible for the care and upkeep of 14 charter vessels. Work included daily maintenance, engine and generator services, interior and deck upkeep, haul-out and yard management, and full systems oversight across the fleet.

Three years as lead Yachtmaster Instructor and charter skipper at Atlantic Yachting Sail and Power, teaching the full range of RYA practical courses up to Yachtmaster level, including Radar, PWC, and PB2. Delivered hands-on instruction to students from beginner through to advanced, skippered mileage-building trips and charters, and developed learning aids to improve student understanding and engagement.

Freelance Yachtmaster Instructor at Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School, instructing RYA courses up to Yachtmaster Offshore level and skippering mileage-building trips along the Cape Agulhas to Langebaan route on the South African west coast.

Solo charter skipper with MedSailors along the Croatian coast, responsible for navigation, guest safety, and overall trip management on catamarans. Handled all onboard duties for a safe and enjoyable experience for guests throughout the season.

Yachtmaster Instructor at Sail Due South, instructing RYA courses up to Yachtmaster Offshore level, skippering mileage-building trips and charters, and overseeing the maintenance, safety, and compliance of the school fleet.
